In partnership with Islington Council, AFK has produced a unique Travel Training Toolkit, supporting young people with additional needs to develop their confidence and skills to travel as independently on the Transport For London network and walking routes.

If you are a young person and have autism or a disability and live in London, we can support you with travel.

AFK promotes independence for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and has developed a travel training program individually tailored to the needs of young people attending school, work placements or who get paid jobs as part of our Life & Work programme.

We recognise that for many young people and their families this is a big and sometimes frightening step, but we believe that by listening to young people and their parents’ concerns and with the right training and support any young person can make remarkable progress towards independent travel.

Isabella from Islington Council:

‘Being able to travel on public transport is a key life skill and provides an individual the opportunity to make choices about how they live, go about their daily life and fulfil their potential.

This is an area which Islington Council is especially keen to develop in order to provide our young people with access to as wide a range of opportunities as possible and raise expectations in terms of achievements.

Independent Travel – a planning guide for families: the Travel Training Toolkit developed by AFK is a helpful, comprehensive and insightful guide for families.

Having navigated the process of supporting my own son through developing his independent travel training skills, and having seen the impact this has had on his confidence, independence and self-worth, not only opened up opportunities for him but also provided us as parents with a new lease of life!’
